St John’s Eagles Can Make History with State Title

St. John's Prep and Saint John's High School face-off Saturday night on the court for the state Division 1 championship. Both all-boys Catholic schools are sponsored by the Xaverian Brotherhood. This is the Eagles first State Final appearance since 1974.

With a in the semifinals Tuesday night at the TD Garden, the St. John’s Prep basketball team has earned its first trip in a long while to the Division I State Finals, taking on St. John’s Shrewsbury at the DCU Center Saturday night. Game time is 7:30 p.m.

The Eagles, ranked No. 1 in the state, are now 24-1 this year, only facing defeat at the hands of the during the regular season. They for the Division I North title after dispatching a formidable opponent in . But the last time they made it to the State Finals was in 1974, losing to Boston English. The Saint John’s Pioneers are 21-3, but they’ve also won a state title recently.

The Pioneers are no doubt hungry for another championship, aiming for their second in three years. Saint John’s fell to Catholic Central last year by a mere point, 56-55, after winning a third straight sectional title.
