Thelma Poitras Helps Raise Danvers' Children

Poitras, originally from Guatemala, runs a family day care in Danvers.

Thelma Poitras runs a family home day care and cares for six children each day. Danvers Patch talked to Thelma about her work and her life in Danvers. 

Name: Thelma Poitras

Family:  Thelma lives with her husband Rob and her daughters, Carla, age 16, and Erica, age 19.

Occupation: Thelma runs a family home day care for the past 15 years. She has six children she cares for each day and all the parents say how comfortable they are with the care of their children.

One mother, Melanie Bettencourt, said, “She has become a great family friend and has always been there for me and my family, and she is going to be deeply missed when my daughter Meadow leaves to attend pre-school.”

Hobbies and Interests: Thelma loves to sew. She makes all kinds of things, she is good at reupholstering furniture, making curtains and she loves to travel.  Thelma also spends a great deal of time involved with her daughter’s activities and fundraising for the cheerleaders. Thelma is from Guatemala and travels back there each summer to visit.

Favorite Book:  "El Martir del Golgata," a book given to her by her father.

Best movie: "Sleepless in Seattle" or "Pride and Prejudice."

Dream vacation: Thelma’s dream vacation is a trip to Egypt. She always loved the pyramids, mummies and the culture.

How long have you lived in Danvers: Seven years.

What made you choose Danvers: The school system was a large part and they found a great home for the day care. 

What is your favorite shop? Thelma does not like to shop. 

What is your favorite eatery: Sawsadee

Where would someone see you around town: At home with the kids and walking in the neighborhood with them. Thelma describes herself as a homebody.

What would you like to see changed in town: She likes Danvers a lot and doesn’t feel there is anything she wants to change.
