This Week in Danvers History: 1920

What happened this week in Danvers in 1920? Find out!

This Week in History in...1920

  • A concert was held by Mrs. E.B. Nichols to display the talent of her music students: Frances Merrick, B. Shapleigh Symonds, and Sylvia Gaines. The students' music was quite popular in Danvers, as they played at different events, such as weddings, around town.

  • Dental hygienists were going to Danvers schools to give check up for the students. Notices would then be sent home suggesting when the parents should take the student to the dentist, and what work should be done.

  • "The World and His Wife" was filmed at the Elm Theatre with popular actors and actresses such as Alma Rubens, Montagu Love, Gaston Glass, Pedro de Cordoba, and Charles Gerard. Due to the popularity, big attendance was expected for the premiere.

  • Holten High School started up a new football team after being absent from the game for six years. Coach Lombard began prepping the players, many of whom had never played, for their first game against Amesbury.

  • Due to overcrowding, the Maple Street School began combining grades into the same classrooms, even though many parents were against the idea. Grades One and Three met at the same time, while Grades Two and Four met together.
