This Week in History...1978

  • and were preparing for their annual opener at Deering Stadium. This was being considered the biggest game of the season, as both teams would be competing for the town cup.

  • An all-day party was held as a benefit for children with disabilities. The event included a dance and buffett, and the organizers were asking for donations of $5.00.

  • Four men were running for Congress in the '78 Election: Nick Marrouleo appealed to Danvers voters because of his background and experience; John McKean, who appealed to voters because of his leadership qualities; Jim Smith, was considered the voice of small businesses across town; and Bill Bronson, who appealed to voters because of his concern for the economy.

  • The Hunt Hospital was renovating after 50 years of servicing the community. The renovations and reconstuction were intended to improve the hospital conditions. The remodeling project took 16 years to begin, after trying to raise funds up to $700,000.

  • The Hawthorne Girl Scout Council held an annual dinner honoring residents of Danvers for their service. Mrs. Pauline Armstrong received the Thanks Badge--the highest honor for volunteers--for her 31 years of dedication.
