Traffic Alert: Water Main Leak Closes a Portion of Liberty Street

Riverside Elementary School accessible from Elliott Street only

Authorities closed down a portion of Liberty Street between Elliott Street (Route 62) and High Street this afternoon because of a water main leak. The roadway will remain closed until crews can repair a leak to the 30-inch water main feed that runs from Beverly to Salem.

The businesses on the northern portion of Liberty St are accessible from Elliott Street, according to the Danvers Police.

The after school program at the Riverside Elementary School is accessible from Elliott Street only.

Robert E. Lee, director of operations for the Danvers Department of Public Works, said Salem and Beverly water districts would be responsible for the repairs.

Michael P. Collins, commissioner of Public Services and Engineering in Beverly, said it is Salem’s water main pipe.

“We assisted with shutting down,” Collins said in an email response. “Working with them on logistics to make sure everyone has water.”

Salem crews were dispatched. There had been one complaint of brown water in Salem, but it was not clear yet if the problem was related to the water leak.

The repairs could take some time to complete.
