Varsity Sports This Week: April 4–10
Spring sports get in full swing this week. Also, read on for a brief recap of how each team faired last year.

Scroll through below for the sports schedules for and this week along with a brief recap on each team’s respective season last year.
Danvers High School
- Baseball: On the diamond, the Falcons’ boys went 14-6 last year and on to defeat in the Division II North quarterfinal playoff round against Reading, 3-2.
- Softball: The girls’ softball squad, seeded No. 3 for the postseason, met defeat against Dracut in the Sectional quarterfinal, 8-0. It was a disappointing finish for the Lady Falcons who were flawless in 2009 on a 20-0 record and lost a close game to Lexington in the Sectional finals.
- Lacrosse: The boys’ lacrosse team went 12-8 last year and lost early on in the Division II East playoffs to Falmouth. Girls’ lax, however, was 17-3 and the No. 2 seed in the playoff stretch. The Lady Falcons’ saw defeat at the hands of Weston, however, in the Division II North semi-final.
- Tennis: On the tennis court, the boys’ made it to the postseason on an 11-9 record and fell in the first round to Cambridge. The girls’ similarly fell in early postseason play to Melrose on a 10-8 record in the regular season.
- Track: The girls’ outdoor track squad finished a middling 16th at the Eastern Mass. Division III Championships last year.
St. John’s Preparatory School
- Lacrosse: The Prep lacrosse squad was 16-2 and seeded No. 2 going into the Division I East tournament last year and came away with an upset on top-seeded Duxbury, snatching away a seventh straight state championship from the Dragons by a mere point in overtime. No doubt sweet revenge for the year before when the Eagles lost the state championship by a point to Duxbury.
- Baseball: On the diamond, the Eagles turned some heads, fielding the Division I North title over No. 2 seed Lawrence — then again, they did make it to the Sectional Final in 2009 as well, but lost to Gloucester. The Prep players came into the 2010 postseason on a 12-8 record and ultimately lost to Xaverian in the state semi-final.
- Tennis: Prep tennis lost to Lexington in the Division I North quarterfinal after going 13-5 in the regular season.
- Volleyball: On the volleyball court, the three-time State Champion Eagles took the Sectional North title (adding yet another to the trophy case) after an 18-1 regular season performance, but fell to Natick, 3-2, in the state semi-final.
- Track: The Eagles’ track club finished the Eastern Mass. Division I meet in fourth place and finished sixth at All-States.
- Rugby: Rugby, which is not recognized by the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association, is run by the Massachusetts Youth Rugby Organization for youths and high school clubs. The Prep competes in Division I of the U19 league against some of its regular opponents in the Catholic Conference in other sports. The Eagles finished a perfect season last year, 7-0. The first MYRO tournament took place last year in Springfield and this year’s tournament will be hosted by St. John’s on May 14.
- Sailing: The St. John’s Prep sailors compete in Division A of the Mass. Bay League, which is run by the New England Schools Sailing Association — the New England district of the Interscholastic Sailing Association. The Eagles finished the 2010 season at 2-7.
