Today's riddle: What is clean when it is black and dirty when it is white? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Ferry Street shut down in Easthampton after sinkhole reveals water pipe failure (gazettenet.com) — Ferry Street in Easthampton is fully closed from Parsons to East Street for potentially up to four weeks after a sinkhole exposed a failed century-old water pipe tied to the former mill. City officials say repairs are a top priority and connect this emergency work to longer-term grant-funded projects that will upgrade infrastructure, sidewalks, and support new housing at 11 Ferry Street.
2. Easthampton School Committee, City Council seek monthly finance reports as auditing backlog lingers (gazettenet.com) — Easthampton officials are working through years of financial auditing backlogs before they can give the School Committee and City Council up-to-date monthly budget reports. With union negotiations looming, leaders are adding staff hours and a part-time tax collector to catch up, aiming to provide clearer, more transparent numbers to guide school funding and city decisions within about three months.
3. Easthampton receives $4.9 million MassWorks grant (thereminder.com) — Easthampton is getting a $4.9 million MassWorks grant to replace aging water and sewer lines along Northampton Street, clearing the way for the 202-unit Sierra Vista Commons housing project and other business growth. Additional grants will fund an updated Housing Production Plan and new downtown wayfinding, helping shape future zoning, housing affordability, and how residents navigate the city.
4. Easthampton schools goes back to paper and pencil following cyberattack (westernmassnews.com) — Easthampton Public Schools' entire computer network is shut down after a cybersecurity incident, forcing teachers and students to switch to paper, pencils, and other analog work while experts investigate. Families are worried about the safety of student data, but key systems like medical records and building security are being prioritized, and ParentSquare plus temporary hotspots are keeping communication going, though responses may be slower than usual.
