Animal Protection Center to Hold Mature Cat Adopt-a-Thon This Weekend

Anonymous donor pledges funds for each cat adopted this weekend

Submitted to Easton Patch:

The Animal Protection Center of Southeastern Mass. is waiving all adoption fees for cats age 7 years and older on Saturday, April 14 and Sunday, April 15 during its adopt-a-thon for mature cats.

The cats will receive all vaccinations, microchip, FeLV/FIV test and spay/neuter, and APCSM’s community partners Brockton Animal Hospital and Lloyd Animal Medical Center in Stoughton are donating a free “wellness exam” for each cat adopted during this event. Regular adoption procedures and policies apply.

Additionally, an anonymous supporter of the shelter will donate $10 for each older cat adopted. If all the cats age 7 and older are adopted during the weekend, the donation will double.

“Adopting an adult cat creates a unique bond between a pet and the owner,” said Dr. Ron Hirschberg, director of the Brockton Animal Hospital. “Adult cats make excellent pets as they tend to be more adaptive in nature, fitting into the lifestyle of the owner. Adults require minimal training and – unlike a kitten – the personality is fully developed and evident.”

The shelter currently has about 20 cats that are over the age of 7. They are friendly, affectionate and many are good with other cats and do not need the training kittens require, such as using a litter box.

“With routine care and as cat owners become more responsible, we are seeing cats live a lot longer – 18 to 20 years,” said APCSM Manager Kim Heise. “Ten is no longer considered ‘old.’ In the spring, the shelter historically gets an overabundance of kittens. These mature cats are really wonderful and we don’t want them to be overlooked.”

The adopt-a-thon will be held from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The popular monthly bake sale will also be going on during the event, and the shelter is also currently accepting items for its spring yard sale.
