Antique Cartridge Prompts Easton Middle School Shelter-In-Place

Officials said a .22 caliber short rimfire round was found - ammunition that hasn't been manufactured in over 50 years.

EASTON, MA — A shelter-in-place was called for Easton Middle School Friday morning after a school staff member found an antique ammunition cartridge in a storage area. The shelter-in-place has been lifted and police said there is no threat to the school.

Police Chief Gary Sullivan and Superintendent Lisha Cabral said a staff member found the corroded .22 caliber short rimfire round around 8:30 a.m. in a storage area that has limited access to both students and staff. The ammunition has not been manufactured in over 50 years.

The shelter-in-place was called out of an abundance of caution. Police searched the school with a K9 and classes continued as normal, though students did not go into the hallways to keep them from the K9.
