Paving and snow removal scams occur regularly throughout New England.

“Beware of unsolicited offers to do paving, roofing or snow removal work and certainly do not let the solicitors into your home,” advises Paula Fleming, spokesperson for the local BBB.

BBB advises the community to avoid paving scams with these tips:

Do your research. Before making any decision to hire a paving or snow removal business, check out the business at bbb.org first.

Don’t pay upfront. BBB recommends people never pay in full upfront or with cash. Paying by credit card offers more protection in case an issue arises. Once cash is handed over, it’s gone.

Get it in writing. Reputable businesses will write up a contract with a description of materials, labor, start and completion dates, business name, address and phone number.

Contact the police. If you feel threatened by a door-to-door salesperson, report them to your local police department. BBB encourages anyone who comes across a paving scam to report it to the local police and BBB’s Scam Tracker.
