You may have read Pilates makes you taller or heard a quote from a celebrity stating they “grew an inch” from practicing Pilates, is this true? Why is this? Pilates focuses on aligning the spine, lengthening muscles, improving flexibility and strengthening the core. While your bones may not actually lengthen, when you practice Pilates you stand taller, your core is engaged and your shoulders are not hunched. Your posture improves immediately as a strong core supports your spine. Even beginners experience this sensation of becoming taller. You will move more gracefully connecting your mind and body, bringing the new awareness you learn in class to your life’s daily routine. Your spine may be stuck in areas; Pilates will open the spaces in your spine, again creating length. Pilates removes compression of the spine which is why those who practice are relieved of back pain. When you bring Pilates into your life, you will appear taller, radiate wellness and even look younger. As Joseph Pilates, founder of Pilates said, “You're only as young as your spine is flexible.”
