Easton Emergency Officials Gear Up for Irene
Firefighters prepare equipment and supplies, remind residents to stay safe.

With the National Weather Service predicting heavy winds as a result of Hurricane Irene, a possibility of five to 10 inches of rain and a flood watch for Saturday night through Sunday, Easton emergency workers are preparing for the worst - and they're asking residents to do the same.
"The biggest things we're watching out for are trees down and down wires," Easton Fire Captain James Walsh said Friday. "We'd advise anybody not to touch any wires and to call the fire department."
Walsh said there will be extra emergency workers on duty throughout the storm. The department has also equipped each engine with extra chainsaws.

In addition to down trees and wires, the department is also expecting power and flooding issues throughout town. Walsh advised residents to use caution with generators and ensure that they are grounded properly.
With heavy winds, he also warned residents to stay away from windows and secure outside items.

As for items to stock up on, water, batteries, a first aid kit and flash lights are essential, he said.
"We don't recommend candles," he said, citing a fire hazard.
He said a proper container such as a plate or a sauce pan are recommended if a candle must be used.
