Fado! - Examining the poetic music of Portugal

Fado (Portuguese: destiny, fate) is a music genre which can be traced to the 1820s in Portugal, but probably with much earlier origins. In popular belief, fado is a form of music characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor. However, in reality fado is simply a form of song which can be about anything, but must follow a certain structure. (From Wikipedia)

Presentor Antonio Cabral grew up hearing and playing the music of Portugal, the Azores and Madeira. Retirement from teaching science has allowed him to develop his fifty-year interest in fado. He especially enjoys sharing the essence of fado and its historical settings with non-Portuguese audiences. Antonio has led fado study groups in the UMass Dartmouth lifelong learning program and at Portuguese language classes at Massasoit Community College and Brockton High School.
