Master of Makeovers: Edward 'Scissors Hands' Blum Brings Milan Fashion Week Hairstyle Trends Back to His Salon Clients

Co-Founder of Makeovers Salon + Spa Has 38 Years in the Hair styling Business

A client who’s also an artist referred to her hairstylist Ed Blum as ‘Picasso’ – and looking in the mirror announced, “I’m in heaven.”

Other clients refer to Blum as ‘Edward Scissors Hands’ – a reference to Johnny Depp’s mystical character in the 1990 Tim Burton movie.

Always pushing to take the lead in America’s $20 billion hair care services industry, Blum has a history of being first, introducing latest styles and trends at his Easton, Mass., Makeovers Salon + Spa (http://makeoverssalon.com/). His latest: an unusual clay-based color technique in which hair is painted with an artist’s brush. The Wella formula “lightens without foils, bleeding or swelling for a natural, sun-kissed look,” Blum says. “I love how it brings out the organic child artist in all of us. It’s such a tactile process.”

Blum, with 38 years in the hairstyling and salon business and who owns Makeovers with his wife Norah, spent a week this Fall at the 2016 Milan Fashion Week as one of L’Oreal’s Professional Portfolio Artists. He’s part of an exclusive hairstylist group recognized for their creativity and expertise in professional hairdressing.

At Makeovers, Blum is introducing Milan 2016 styles like silhouettes that are reminiscent of the 70’s and the 90’s. “I noted long lace and harder edges, denoting a feminine -- yet rebellious -- time in fashion. The hair and clothes are well-paired. We have short crops of cuts that remind us of Mia Farrow with an edgy twist of two texture and disconnected longer looks with tie-dye colors, spliced to fit the individual’s facial contour.”

Blum says, “I have brought back to my staff and clients a sense of freedom in creation with a focus on the trend direction. The staff is always so on top of things and ready to go due to their constant education and dedication to their craft. I will teach a looser, more individually contoured collection with less focus on precise, harder edges and a softer, freer flow to form.

“It was beyond exciting to be surrounded by so many of the world’s greatest designers, celebrities, top models, and fellow hairstylists who are reinventing the most beautiful profession every day,” smiled Blum. In Milan, Blum worked with legends from the L’Oreal Professionnel World Tour including French Hairstylist Champion Laurent Decreton, L’Oreal Hairstyling Ambassador and Artistic Director at Haute Coiffure Francoise. He also found inspiration from stylists at Armani, Louis Vuitton, Prada, and Urban Decay, among others. Makeovers carries the entire L’Oréal Professionnel brand portfolio and provides clients with innovative, technologically advanced products that allow for professional excellence and client personalization.

Ed Blum has been the stylist for ‘Days of Our Lives’ soap opera’s Kristian Alfonso (Hope), and for TV’s Judge Maria Lopez. Makeovers Salon & Spa was the set for the Disney pilot, ‘Postcards from Heaven’ with medium Maureen Hancock, and casting calls with ‘The Rock.’
