Legendary Oliver Ames High School coach and OAHS Athletic Hall of Fame member, Sue Rivard, says that in researching Dorothy “Dot” Hatchfield’s athletic career, the peers of Dot said she was the, “Babe Didrikson Zaharias of her day,” a comparison to one of the greatest female athletes of the 20 Century.
Sue Rivard also said, “It is too bad that female high school athletes of her time did not receive much attention by the press, or have many opportunities available to them to compete.”

It is an extraordinary testament to Dot’s abilities that at OA she lettered four years in both field hockey and basketball, and captained the teams all four years    Playing on the forward line her senior year in field hockey, she led OA to an undefeated record of six wins and three ties, with OA scoring 17 goals against its opponents’ two. Tennis was a club sport at OA when Dot was a freshman, sopho- more, and junior – but it became a varsity sport for her senior year– and of course Dot Hatchfield was the top OA player.    Dot’s classmates voted her the “Outstanding Girl Athlete” for the OA Class of 1941.

MARK LUKE- 1995

Mark Luke was a powerful lineman for the Tiger football team, starting from his sophomore year on at center and defensive tackle. He also lettered in basketball as a senior.

Mark’s senior year in football, Oliver Ames High School only lost one game, to eventual Super Bowl champion Mansfield. It was the best Tiger football season record in more than 25 years. For his exploits in that gridiron campaign, Mark was named OA Lineman of the Year, All Hockomock, and Enterprise All Scholastic.

Mark went on to a standout career at Westfield State College, where, playing on the line at 295 pounds, he started four years, and for three of those years he was voted the team’s “Outstanding Lineman” and All New England Football Conference.

Mark was also named All Eastern College Athletic Conference. He was a tri-captain of the Owls as a senior. After college, Mark went into elementary school teaching; he also was an assistant coach of the OA football team.

ANDI MATTHEWS - 2001

Andi Matthews was a versatile, highly talented, and intense competitor for Oliver Ames High School in soccer, basketball, and track & field.

It was in soccer where Andi shone the brightest. Standing six feet tall, Andi was the star fullback for Tiger teams that won back-to-back state titles, in 1999 and 2000. Andi started three years for the Tigers, and captained the team as a senior.    She was a two time Hockomock League All Star (MVP of the squad her senior year), two time Enterprise All Scholastic, two time Boston Globe All Scholastic, two time Boston Herald All Scholastic, two time Eastern Massachusetts All Star, and was named to two All State teams.    Andi started for the 2000 Tiger hoops squad that won the Eastern Massachusetts Div. 2
South Sectionals and advanced to the EMass finals at the Fleet Center.
Andi attended Northeastern University on a full athletic scholarship to play soccer for the Huskies. She had big time success at the next level.

Andi was a backbone of the NU defense, moving into a starting slot her freshman year. She started 60 of the 65 games she played over four years for the Huskies. When Andi graduated, the honors she had achieved included being elected twice a captain of the NU team, being twice named All America-East-Conference Honorable Mention, and MVP of the Florida Atlantic Doubletree Classic Tournament.

LAMARR MONTERIO - 2001

While playing football for Oliver Ames High School, Lamarr Monterio established himself among the most heralded running backs in Massachusetts prep history.

During his time with the Tigers, this halfback, with championship sprinter speed, a keen mind for find- ing the hole, and exceptional agility, rushed for 4,808 yards – which ranked him fifth on the all-time Massachusetts yards rushing list, and which is also a school and Hockomock League record. He scored 63 career touchdowns, a school and league record. He was a three time All Hockomock, and was named MVP of the All Hock team his senior year.    Lamarr was named Enterprise, Boston Globe, and Boston Herald All Scholastic. He captained his team in the 2001 Shriners Football Classic.    Lamarr was also a standout in track, winning the Hockomock League 100 meter championship, and being named to an Enterprise All Scholastic track team.

There was an intense college recruiting battle for Lamarr. University of Massachusetts-Amherst won out. Lamarr played defensive back for UMass – and then transferred to Northeastern University.    Lamarr would transfer one more time, to Curry College, where he finished his collegiate career as the Colonels starting defensive back.

KRISTIN SCALIA (MARIANI) - 2000

Kristin Scalia was a feisty, non-stop, field and court leader for Oliver Ames High School soccer and bas- ketball teams, stewarding squads that won several championships, including back to back state titles in soccer, and a South Sectional title in hoops.

A clutch performing midfielder, Kristin played four years of varsity soccer, captaining the 1998 and 1999 teams that captured the state crown, and being named All Hockomock as a senior. Kristin played three years of varsity hoops, was a captain as a sen- ior, and was the point guard and floor leader for the 1999-2000 Tiger squad that won the Eastern Massachusetts Div. 2 South Sectionals and advanced to the Eastern Mass finals at the Fleet Center.
Kristin was also a leader off the field and court, being elected and serving as president of her class for her sophomore, junior, and senior years.

Kristin went on to St. Anselm College and more success. She played four years of varsity soccer, and captained the team as a junior and senior. Kristin received the Fr. Bernard Holmes Scholarship, which provides St. Anselm students with a full tuition scholarship for their senior years. Recipients of the Fr. Holmes scholarship “must demonstrate concern for and assistance to others, potential for leadership, and a love of learning. They must also participate in the life of the college.”

CHRIS TIGHE - 2001

Chris Tighe follows into the Oliver Ames High School Athletic Hall of Fame his father, Brad (OA ’75), who was inducted in the hall in 2005. And like his dad, he was an immensely valuable contributor to the Tiger football and basketball teams.

In football, Chris was a quarterback, and started three games as a sophomore; he started all games his junior and senior year, with the Tigers going 6-4 for both of those campaigns. Chris achieved more distinction on the hardwood where he started three years as a scoring guard who could also pass and run the offense.    As a junior and senior, he made All Hockomock, Enterprise All
Scholastic, and Boston Herald All Scholastic.  Chris is a member of the elite OA 1000 Point Club.

Chris went on to Suffolk University where he started every game over four years. His freshman year, Suffolk won the Great Northeast Athletic Conference champi- onship, and Chris was named the team’s “Rookie of the Year.”    Chris was a team captain and named “Team MVP” his senior year.
