Oliver Ames Athletic Hall of Fame Inductees: The Teams

Classes of 2010 and 2011 to the OA Athletic Hall of Fame were inducted last Saturday.

This week, Patch is taking a look at the most recent inductees into the Athletic Hall of Fame. Last Saturday, the Hall of Fame In all, 11 athletes, one citizen, two coaches and two teams were inducted.

Today, we bring to you the teams inducted in to the Hall of Fame last Saturday.

1960 OLIVER AMES HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM

Oliver Ames High School was on a roll in football during this period, finishing the 1960 season with a perfect record of 9-0-0, which capped a six year run in which OA went 43-7-2.

Bill Vellante coached the OA team that went 8-0-1 in 1955 – and then Valentine Muscato took over as coach, with Bill Nixon as assistant, and over the next five seasons OA put up a record of 35-7-1, including three undefeated seasons, two of which also were undefeated and untied campaigns.

The tigers of the 1960 were to win the Hockomock League and be named the mythical Eastern Massachusetts class D champions.

Here are the 1960 game scores, in chronological order: OA 8 – Case 0, OA 34 – Cohasset 14, OA 14 – Mansfield 6, OA 34 – King Philip 12, OA 14 – Scituate 6, OA 36 – Franklin 8, OA 8 – Canton 6, OA 32 – Foxboro 6, OA 50 – Randolph 14.
Co-captains of the team were seniors Ed Lemish and John Smith.

1964 OLIVER AMES HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL TEAM

In 1963, the Oliver Ames High School football team won the Hockomock League championship and had only one loss. In 1964, it had a nine starters returning, and expectations were for another league championship and maybe an undefeated run of the season.

OA would finish the season at 8-0-0 to win the Hockomock League and be named Eastern Massachusetts Class D champions. The Tigers also shut out five teams.    OA started out the ’64 campaign with a 20-0 win over Hull. Then came, in order, the following victories:    22-0 over Mansfield, 12-0 over King Philip, 12-6 over Taunton, 20-14 over Franklin, 46-18 over Canton, and a 2-0 win over Foxboro. On Thanksgiving Day, OA beat Randolph 6-0 in the mud at Frothingham Park and finished the season 8-0-0.

Co-captains of the 1964 team were seniors David Manchester and Joe Kelly.
