Leventhal scammed people across the country by offering to purchase property and then rent it to the victims on a rent to own basis. He would take a “commitment deposit” typically of $1,000 but the transaction would never go through. Many of the victims lost $1,000 to $8,000 through the scheme.

Leventhal contacted people through websites such as Rent 2 Own Connect, Craigslist and www.hslhomes.com.

Leventhal will begin his sentence on Tuesday, Feb. 17.
