Southeastern Regional Students Showcase Talents at Zeiterion Theatre in New Bedford

Students turn recyclable trash into stylish costumes

Student designers turned recyclable trash into stylish costumes at the October 24th “Trashin Fashion” show at the Zeiterion Theatre in New Bedford. The theme of the event was “Seasons.”

The Southeastern Regional Vocational Technical High School students presented to an audience of students, adults, business people and others passionate about the environment, agriculture and social equality.

“Participating in the Connecting for Change Conference was a very enriching experience for our students,” said Design and Visual Communications instructor, Mrs. Shirley Ezerins. “They created, edited, practiced and then presented their work in a public forum. James Fernandes (a History teacher at Southeastern) coached the students in their theatrical presentations.”

Angie Diego, a junior at Southeastern Regional, read an original poem called “Earth’s Struggle to Survive,” while Rui Shi, originally from Beijing, China, shared thoughts about China and the US through a monologue about environmental concerns and the effect of pollution on an interconnected world.”

It was a special treat for attendees when “Trashin Fashion” models led audience members to the lunch tents, allowing guests photo opportunities. Attendees also enjoyed the interactive, educational displays in Southeastern Regional’s “BioBus”, courtesy of the Environmental vocational program students and instructor, Miss Tabitha Hobbs, and her student assistants, Alex Bernier and Emily MacDonald. The “BioBus” was created as a multi-vocational collaborative project.

At the end of the day, students got to go out for dinner and attended the play “In Prism”, about the struggles of incarcerated youth, performed by Truthworker Theater.

“The conference highlighted the connectedness of social, political and environmental issues around the world. Students had the opportunity to view exhibits, attend workshops and ended the evening with a very dramatic theatrical presentation. Upon return to Southeastern, our tired students were very proud of their accomplishments,” said Mrs. Ezerins.
