Basketball teams look to clinch state tournament births this week with contests against Stoughton and Canton

Last week in Oliver Ames sports, the boys and girls basketball teams put themselves in position to control its own postseason destines, the hockey team bounced back with a victory over Stoughton and honored the late Craig Charron in its scoreless tie with Spencerport, the swimming teams came away with an impressive victory over Attleboro and took fifth place in the Hockomock League Championships and the track and field teams took home the Davenport Division crown with victories over Canton.
With the winter sports season nearing its conclusion to the 2010-11 season, OA should be well represented come state tournament time. That said, there’s still some work that needs to be done to conclude the regular season.
With that here is your look at this week’s schedule in Oliver Ames sports.

1. After rolling past cross-town and arch-rival Sharon this past week, Don Byron’s squad improved to 9-5 on the season (5-5 Hockomock League, 4-1 Davenport) as the team is just one win away from capturing a spot in the Division 2 State Tournament.
After its huge win on Friday, OA is now just one game behind Stoughton (8-6 overall, 5-5 Hock, 5-0 division) in the Davenport standings as the two teams meet tomorrow night in Stoughton at 6:30 p.m. Earlier this year, the Knights defeated the Tigers in the Nixon Gymnasium in a double overtime thriller.

Nick Bruha and company will close out the week with a home contest against fellow Davenport foe Canton at 6:30 p.m.
2. While the OA Boys are still battling for the top spot in the Davenport Division, the OA girls (9-4, 7-3), under Elaine-Clement Holbrook, controls its own destiny. The girls are currently a perfect 5-0 in division play and lead second place Foxborough by a game and a half while also holding a two-game lead on Canton.
The Lady Tigers will look to create some more breathing room in the Davenport standings this week with a home contest against Stoughton Tuesday and a road game in Canton Friday. Both games are scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff.
3. After starting last week with a 10-1 victory over Stoughton, the OA hockey team (5-6-3, 3-4-2) will meet the Knights once again to kick off this week's slate with a 4:30 p.m. faceoff at ASIAF Rink. Last week’s game against Foxborough – originally rescheduled last Wednesday – has been moved to Wednseday, Feb 9 at 7:30 p.m. which will also be held at ASIAF
4. Coming off their victories over Canton, the Tigers’ track teams will head to the Reggie Lewis Center for the Hockomock League Championships this Saturday. The teams have already captured the Davenport crown and will be looking to add the league crown to the trophy case.
5. While nothing is set in stone regarding the Hockomock Crossover next week, boys basketball, girls basketball and hockey should all be competing against one of the top two teams from the Rex-Kelly Division by the time the match-up are announced. Both the boys’ basketball and hockey teams would face Franklin and girls basketball would face Mansfield if the season ended today.
Sports Editor Note: The OA-Foxborough makeup date in hockey, which was originally re-scheduled for March 1, has been moved again to Wednesday, Feb 9. Easton patch has confirmed this change and the changes were made in this article.
