5 Things You Need to Know Today, 2/12

Orchid seminar, clothing exchange and more for February 12.

1) Mostly sunny in the morning, then becoming mostly cloudy. Highs will be in the upper 30s. It will be partly cloudy in the evening, then clearing — blustery with lows in the mid 20s. 

2) What better way to spend a winter's afternoon than in a warm, tropical greenhouse? Mahoney's Garden Center in East Falmouth is sponsoring a talk at 1 pm today by Tina Balog, three-time President of the Cape and Islands Orchid Society, Show Chairman for the Cape Cod Orchid Show, and 15-year exhibit designer for the Boston Flower Show. She'll present a fascinating seminar on everything orchids. She will discuss the history, different varieties, maintenance and repotting of orchids. If you have a “sick” orchid, you are encouraged to bring it in for diagnosis and discussion. Q&A welcome!

3) Head over to the from 10 am - 12 pm for a free children's clothing exchange. The clothing will range in size from infant to 14/16. If you would like to donate clean, lightly used clothing, please leave them at the church during normal business hours or during the hours of the clothing exchange.

4) To mark National Jewish Disabilities Awareness Month, the is holding a public screening tonight at 7 pm of the acclaimed film Anita. All are welcome. Set in Argentina in 1994, the film examines the impact of a terrorist act on the life of its title character, Anita, a woman with Down syndrome played by newcomer Alejandra Manzo. Based on an actual attack that killed 85 people, writer-director Marcos Carnevale's film follows Anita as she wanders the streets after her mother, played by Oscar-winning Noma Aleandro, is apparently killed when a car bomb explodes outside the Jewish community center. The 105-minute film is in Spanish with English subtitles.

5) This day in history: Ethan Allen dies (1789); Slobodon Milosevic goes on trial in the Netherlands for war crimes (2002); and GM offers buyouts to 74,000 workers (2008).
