5 Things You Need to Know Today, 6/1

An art opening at Highfield Hall and more for June 1.

1) Today will be mostly sunny, with a high near 64. Tonight will be partly cloudy, with a low around 60.

2) will host an opening reception for "Kevin King: A Retrospective" tonight from 6-8pm. King has chosen landscapes, mixed media, abstractions and representational pieces for this exhibition. A highlight of the show will be several works from his Ash Series, which was the subject of a recent radio piece that aired during All Things Considered and Morning Edition on WCAI and WGBH. “Flag 9/11” and “Between the Lines” movingly include ash from Ground Zero. Several fish paintings, made from fish ash and oil paint, will also be on display, along with two large works created with ash from books: A Farewell to Arms and Fahrenheit 451. A suggested $5 donation supports the community programming and preservation of Highfield Hall.  

3) The will host an Old Time Gospel Night this evening beginning at 7:30 featuring some of the best sacred bluegrass, along with classic American hymns and spirituals. John Yankee on keyboard will lead the singing, along with Richard Gregory-Allen on fiddle, Rich Armstrong on mandolin, John Alden on bass, Thomas Hodgson on guitar and Jim Shaw on banjo. David Calhoun and Deborah Warner from the Church of the Messiah will enlighten you with humorous tales of life in the hamlets of Woods Hole and Falmouth.

4) Come on out to the tonight at 8:30pm for A Pocket Full of Soul, one of the best local bands around!
