FALMOUTH, MA — Nine public school systems in Massachusetts will receive a total of $19 million to upgrade their aging energy systems, and more than a quarter of that funding will go to Falmouth.
The grants, announced last week, support projects aiming to improve energy efficiency and lower long-term costs.
Falmouth Public Schools received a $5 million grant to partially fund a new ground-source heat pump system at one of two school buildings in the district.
The funding comes through the Green School Works program, administered by the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center and funded by the state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.
“Every student deserves a safe, healthy and modern place to learn,” Gov. Maura Healey said in a news release. “These investments are good for our schools, good for our communities and good for our clean energy future.”
In this latest round of grants, schools plan to make a range of upgrades, including building weatherization and heating system replacements.
Also on the Cape, Truro Central School was awarded $320,000 to help build a solar carport as part of the school’s clean energy upgrades.
Roughly 10,000 students statewide will benefit from the recent grants, according to the release.
