Award Winners Announced in Juried Photography Show

A number of local photographers picked up awards in Falmouth Art Center’s Annual Juried Photography Show this month.

The show runs to May 30. The Opening Reception for this show as well as the two other May shows—Monday Morning Painters and the photography of Christine Chepeleff—is Friday, May 6, from 5 to 7pm.

The juror for the show, international photographer Julia Cumes of Brewster, chose 50 works for the show out of 211 submitted.

The Best of Show award went to Paul M. Murray of Jamestown, Rhode Island, whose photo captures a giraffe drinking from a pool of water.

Among the four juror awards, Walter Knox of Falmouth won for Best Moment, for a photo of a “confrontation” of a pair of birds at a bird feeder; and Paul Rifkin of Waquoit won for Best Nature Image for his photo of a whale eating its way through a giant pod of menhaden.

Best black and white image went to Jay Phyfer of Cotuit for a photo of a woman’s back. Best Landscape went to Tom Noonan of Falmouth for a photo of Castellucio di Norcia in Italy.

Honorable Mentions went to Paul Murray, who also won Best of Show, for a photo of an ice cave in Antarctica; Greg Anderson of Buzzards Bay, for a photo of a hay barge; Jennifer Kano of Cataumet for a photo of a jellyfish; Susan Simon of Marstons Mills for a photo of flowers, just past their prime; Jeannine LaVoie of Bourne for a photo of the Boston cityscape; William Yates of Falmouth for a photo of a woman reading; and Bruce Calabro of Hyannis for a photo of an animal skull.
