Bag Of Explosives Prompts Controlled Detonation On Cape Cod

HARWICH, MA — A routine house cleaning led to a unique discovery for a few locals and officials.

The Harwich Fire Department shared that a bag of explosives was brought to police and fire officials this week, prompting a call into the Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad.

Bomb squad officials were able to perform a controlled detonation for the items at the Harwich Transfer Station on Tuesday.

The find also prompted officials to share guidance with residents if they happen to find themselves in this situation.

While notifying the Police and Fire Department when items like this are found is appropriate, we strongly urge that the items be left in place, so that we can come evaluate them safely.

These items are often old and unstable and bringing to the station put you at risk as well as causing the Complex to be shut down until they can be removed.

Fortunately today, there were no issues and the matter was resolved quickly.
