The 35th Woods Hole Film Festival, “Bold Films, Bright Futures: 35 Years of Films That Matter,” kicks off Saturday, July 25, running for eight exciting days through Saturday, August 1. With feature-length and short films from around the world, engaging Q&amp;As with filmmakers, a master class, panel discussions, a workshop, unforgettable live music parties, and an awards ceremony, this year’s Festival offers something for everyone. Come for the films—stay for the conversation!
In celebration of the 35th
year, 40 festival alums, several of whom have gone on to become Oscar winners or nominees after their films screened at the festival in the past, are either returning with their latest films, or they are leading workshops and participating in panel discussions.
As the longest-running film festival on Cape Cod and the Islands—and one of the oldest in New England—the Woods Hole Film Festival has long championed emerging, independent filmmakers, especially those with ties to the region. This year’s selections were narrowed down to an exciting presentation of independent cinema, with 127 films from 23 countries, including 9 World, 2 North American, and 51 New England premieres by both first-time and veteran filmmakers.
The festival’s thematic strands include films and filmmakers from New England—particularly Massachusetts, including Cape Cod and the Islands—films about music and musicians, and films about science and the environment in conjunction with the festival’s “Bringing Science to the Screen” program.The festival’s intimate seaside setting allows for meaningful conversations between filmmakers and audiences—whether during post-film Q&amp;As, as well as on the street—you never know who you might bump into! Are there ever any “things that are best forgotten?” Perhaps, but we believe that revisiting past scandals can remind us that history was just real life before it was written down. This new walking tour covers the shadier side of local history, from petty feuds and social spats to serious crimes of robbery and murder. You’ll discover eleven events that really happened, but are rarely mentioned in published histories of our town. For instance, we will tell you about a colonial minister who desperately wanted a divorce, a town official caught with counterfeit money, and an unsolved murder that may have been committed by Prohibition-era gangsters.

Old Burying Ground: Grave Undertakings* 5:30pm From the most respected minister to the lowliest outcast, everyone in Falmouth ended up here eventually. See their markers and hear their stories as our tour guide leads you through this hidden gem of a cemetery.&nbsp; * The Old Burying Ground tour meets at the top of Cemetery Lane.&nbsp;
Parking: Please park in the lot at 157 Locust Street. Use the crosswalk to cross Locust St. and head toward the large boulder of the Mariners’ Memorial. Opposite the Memorial, across Mill Rd., join your tour guide at the top of Cemetery Lane.
Recommended for ages 13+ and those who can navigate uneven terrain.

The New Orleans band Ever More Nest is coming to Falmouth at the Waquoit Congregational church on Friday, July 31 at 7 pm. The concert is free and opened to the public.
Rooted in Southern musical traditions and infused with confessional 90s angst, the music of New Orleans Americana artist Ever More Nest can likewise lull you to dream and rock you right off a front porch. Ever More Nest’s dynamic, homegrown voice is complemented by expansive arrangements and rhythm section steady as a country train. 
Led by Kelcy Wilburn, the band incorporates gospel, country, and blues.
“We are excited to introduce Ever More Nest to Cape Cod audiences,” said Annie Polachi, director the Waquoit Concert Series. 
Ever More Nest’s debut, The Place That You Call Home (2018) was nominated for Best Alt-Country Album in the Independent Music Awards, and its single, Major Tom, named a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition.
Inspiration for the band name v More Nest came from a line in a poem by Mary Ann Samyn, which Wilburn found striking in its ability to evoke an expansiveness of time and place. 
The Waquoit Church is located at 15 parsons Lane in E. Falmouth at the corner of Route 28.

“Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Symbiosis: Uncovering the Biology of an Ancient&nbsp;Interkingdom Mutualism” The symbiotic association of plants and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM)&nbsp;fungi originated over 450 million years ago and is thought to have&nbsp;enabled plants to colonize land. Over 70% of extant vascular flowering&nbsp;plant species have retained the capacity to host AM fungi in their root&nbsp;cells and benefit from mineral nutrients delivered via their fungal&nbsp;partners. In this lecture, Harrison will discuss the biology of the&nbsp;symbiosis, including the cellular modifications that enable root cells&nbsp;to accommodate AM fungi, and the mechanisms of carbon and phosphorus&nbsp;exchange between symbionts.


Maria J. Harrison is the William H.&nbsp;Crocker Distinguished Scientist at the Boyce Thompson Institute and an&nbsp;Adjunct Professor in the School of Integrative Plant Science at Cornell&nbsp;University. She received a bachelor’s degree in microbiology from the&nbsp;University of Newcastle upon Tyne (UK) and a Ph.D. in Biochemistry and&nbsp;Applied Molecular Biology from the University of Manchester Institute of&nbsp;Science and Technology (UK). She completed postdoctoral training with&nbsp;Dr. Richard Dixon in the Plant Biology Division of the Samuel Roberts&nbsp;Noble Foundation and subsequently held an independent scientist position&nbsp;there before joining the Boyce Thompson Institute in 2003. In 2015, she&nbsp;received the Cornell College of Agriculture and Life Science Faculty&nbsp;Excellence in Undergraduate Research Mentoring Award and the American&nbsp;Society of Plant Biologists Dennis R. Hoagland Award. She is a member of&nbsp;the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and a Fellow of the Royal&nbsp;Society. Her research program focuses on the arbuscular mycorrhizal&nbsp;symbiosis with the goals of understanding the molecular basis of its&nbsp;development and the mechanisms underlying nutrient transport and&nbsp;regulation of the symbiosis. This research lays the foundation for the&nbsp;development of crops optimized to acquire mineral nutrients via their&nbsp;fungal partners.

Sea Stars Early Learning Center offers a balanced program that incorporates play-based learning, structured lessons, and physical activities. Children are encouraged to explore their interests, whether through music, art, science, or outdoor exploration. There’s a focus on developmental milestones, including fine motor skills, communication, and social interaction. The facility focuses on helping children develop strong social skills through group activities, games, and cooperative learning. There’s an emphasis on emotional intelligence, teaching kids how to manage their feelings and resolve conflicts peacefully. Our amazing helps kids learn to share, collaborate, and support one another, fostering a sense of community. The facility embraces children from all backgrounds and is sensitive to cultural differences, making sure all children feel accepted and valued. The facility features a large, secure outdoor play area with age-appropriate equipment. Children spend plenty of time outdoors, engaging in physical play and exploring nature. There may also be gardening activities. The building is designed with child safety in mind, featuring soft corners, non-toxic materials, and secure fencing around outdoor areas. Access points are monitored and locked to ensure only authorized individuals can enter. There’s a first aid kit and trained staff on hand at all times to handle any emergencies. The classrooms and play areas are spotless, with an abundance of natural light streaming in through large windows. The space is well-organized, with age-appropriate toys, books, and learning materials accessible to children. There’s a cozy reading nook, art stations, and sensory play areas where kids can explore their creativity. Our staff is certified in child development, first aid, and CPR, but they also have a genuine passion for working with children. Melissa Anderson and Leigh-Ellen Ferreira are two Falmouth natives who have spent many years working with children.
