The Falmouth Art Center's annual Abstract Juried Show is receiving pieces next week.

The Falmouth Art Center’s annual Abstract Juried Show is receiving pieces next week. The show is open to any medium. But the piece must be abstract, meaning non-representational.
Artwork to be considered for the show can be dropped off at the Art Center on Tuesday, September 28 from 9am to 5:30pm. Falmouth Art Center members and non-members are both welcome to submit.

The winner of Best in Show gets $200 and there are four additional $100 juror’s awards given plus honorable mentions.
The cost to submit the first piece is $15 for Falmouth Art Center members and $20 for non-members. Submitting additional pieces is $10 for members, $15 for non-members. Other details about submitting can be found on the Art Center website or by calling the Art Center.

The juror of the show, artist Jan Lhormer of East Falmouth, will make her choices on Thursday, September 30, and artists will be notified that afternoon.
Ms. Lhormer, who teaches painting and drawing at Bridgewater State University, is known for her abstract paintings. In a statement about her artwork, she wrote, in part, “Through the ritual of the studio practice, I embrace all things mystical, magical, intuitive and sublime. I use sensual color and ethereal light to create dreamy skies, bountiful waters or lush gardens and give voice to the intangible world of emotion, the unseen, and the poetic.”
Every year for the Abstract Juried Show, there are artists who submit pieces that are actually representational, not abstract, so the Art Center spells out the meaning of abstract on its website. The statement clarifies, that a piece is abstract if “it does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of visual reality, such as a person, an object, a landscape, but instead uses shapes, colors, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect. Even works that loosely depict a recognizable scene, person or object are not considered abstract because the viewer can recognize the subject.
