Cape Cod Weather Forecaster Ranks As Fastest-Growing Business In MA: Report

FALMOUTH, MA — At least some New England businesses are booming, and a new study shows how fast the fastest – including a Cape Cod company – have recently grown.

Salient Predictions, which originated in Woods Hole, ranks second among the 50 New England-based companies with the highest growth rates over a recent three-year period, according to an annual analysis by the Boston Globe.

Indeed, four of the 10 companies at the top of the list, with the very fastest growth, are headquartered in the Bay State.

The rankings are based on each company's compounded rate of revenue increase from 2021 to 2024, the Globe said in a special publication of the rankings on Sunday.

To qualify, companies had to be independent, based in New England, and with revenues of at least $100,000 during 2021 and $1.5 million in 2024. An international data and analysis firm, Statista, crunched the numbers for the Globe.

Salient, an AI-powered weather forecasting service, grew revenue by 1,483% to a total of $1.87 million in 2024, the newspaper reported. Salient launched seven years ago and today has 19 employees in Cambridge and Falmouth.

The company says its artificial intelligence platform analyzes “billions of climate predictors” – including the salt content of oceans – to make short- and long-term weather forecasts. The approach stems from research conducted by a scientist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Ray Schmitt, who later co-founded the company.

The other Massachusetts companies among the Globe’s top 10 are: Old Sod Travel Collection, No. 5; Symbotic, No. 9; and Valere, No. 10.

The fastest-growing company in New England, ranking No. 1, is a New Hampshire business, Tenovi.
