Driver Hospitalized With Serious Injuries After Cape Cod Car Chase

The driver avoided a traffic stop and fled from police, officials said, before crashing into a tree in Falmouth.

FALMOUTH, MA — A driver involved in a Cape Cod car chase is in critical condition after the chase led to a single-car crash in Falmouth this week.

Around 10 p.m. on Tuesday, a Falmouth police officer observed a truck driving on Old Barnstable Road with a headlight out. The officer tried to pull the driver over, but the truck "accelerated rapidly" as the cruiser approached.

A stop was attempted near Eagle Lane, with the officer turning on his lights and siren, but the driver continued through the intersection of Old Barnstable Road and Carriage Shop Road without stopping.

A second police unit saw the chase and briefly joined the pursuit heading north, officials said.

The driver of the truck "disregarded traffic signals" and failed to stop at Hayway Road. Soon after, the driver lost control of their vehicle, crossing into the opposite lane before leaving the road and hitting a large tree on Old Barnstable Road.

Officers at the scene gave the driver aid before requesting emergency assistance for what police are calling "life-threatening injuries."

Falmouth Fire and Rescue personnel needed to extricate the driver before he was transported to the Falmouth Hospital landing zone and airlifted to a trauma center off Cape Cod. Police said the driver remains in critical condition.
