Ten Thousand Years on a Barrier Beach

On August 1, at 7:30 PM Bill Sargent will speak at the Woods Hole Public Library in conjunction with his new book, Beach Wars, and  will take audience members on a whirlwind virtual tour of the last ten thousand years of history on Cape Cod’s Nauset Beach. He will discuss glaciers, pirates, rum running, mooncussers, piping plover, coastal geology and sea level rise.

The author will use photos and illustrations to explain what the 1626 wreck of the Sparrowhawk can tell us about the fate of coastal houses threatened by sea level rise today and explain how a lovelorn pirate suffering from bipolar symptoms ran aground off Wellfleet Massachusetts and became the basis for Johnnie Depp’s character in “Pirates of the Caribbean.” He will delve into controversies about endangered species, ORV’s and even the Cape Cod National Seashore and nude beaches!

William Sargent, a former resident of Woods Hole, is the Director of the Coastlines Project in Ipswich. He has written over a dozen award winning books about the ocean and helped produce several films for the NOVA Science series on PBS. His writing has been highly  praised, including by luminary E.O. Wilson: “It is a gem of Natural History… the best introduction to the original environment of the New England coast.”

This event is free and open to the public. Copies of Beach Wars will be available for purchase and signing. For more details visit the Library’s website at www.woodsholepubliclibrary.org or call 508-548-8961.
