Anti-Defamation League (ADL) New England Regional Director Derrek L. Shulman will be the featured speake. The ADL was the driving force behind the creation of the Massachusetts school anti-bullying law and a leading voice on the issue of bullying nationwide. Shulman will discuss how the Massachusetts law is being implemented in our schools and the impact it is having, and why it is the most comprehensive anti-bullying law in the nation. ADL continues to work with the Attorney General and state education officials to make improvements to the law.
Shulman will also speak about the rise of anti-Semitism in our community. Anti-Semitism is a type of prejudice often fueled by the Internet, where individuals and organizations can disseminate with ease and anonymity. Shulman will discuss how the ADL creates safer communities in an increasingly challenging environment.
Anti-Semitism has been resurging locally and globally in recent years. Anxiety over terrorism, concerns about stability in the Middle East and in economic markets, campaigns against Israel, and the “diminution of shame” about expressing anti-Semitism have contributed to an increase of anti-Semitic attitudes and incidents.
