This summer, FCTV will be bringing back two popular classes designed for people interested in learning more about how to manage a website’s content using one of today’s increasingly popular content management systems. A Web Content Management System (or Web CMS) is a web application that allows individuals or groups to maintain the content on a website with little or no technical expertise. Many of the most popular websites on the Internet use some type of web-based management system to keep their content fresh and up-to-date. These workshops will be available to both FCTV members and non-members.
On Tuesday, July 3rd and Wednesday, August 29th, from 6pm to 9pm, FCTV offers a one-evening demonstration and discussion entitled “CMS 101: Build a Better Website - An Introduction to Drupal, Wordpress, and Other Content Management Systems.” The seminar will present an overview of some of the popular web content management systems in use today, including how they are set up, how they work and how various systems differ. Several popular systems will be covered, including Wordpress, Joomla!, and Drupal. The object of this seminar is to help those interested in starting or maintaining a website better understand some of the options available to them and how to go about obtaining them. The fee for this seminar is $25.00 for FCTV members and $35.00 for non-members.
The one evening seminar will be followed in late June by a separate four-session workshop entitled “Drupal Basics: Building and Maintaining Your Website with Drupal.” This workshop will take place on four Tuesday evenings from 7-9pm, beginning on July 10th. This workshop will focus on how to build, organize, and maintain a website using the popular free and open source content management system, Drupal. Drupal is used by some of the most high profile organizations, government institutions, corporations, groups and individuals in the world, from The White House, Price Waterhouse Cooper, Sun Microsystems, Amnesty International, Oxfam, and SourceForge to The Kentucky Derby, Bob Dylan, Comic Relief, Metallica, and Brittney Spears. It is also used by FCTV itself for its website, www.fctv.org. The topics covered will include hosting and installation issues, using and finding themes, managing users and creating roles to delegate tasks, organizing your content and menus, and incorporating some helpful Drupal modules that allow you to add calendars, image galleries and interactive forms. The workshop will incorporate demonstrations and examples of the many features of the system with each evening focusing on a different aspect or aspects of Drupal. This workshop is perfect for those interested in rejuvenating or creating a new web presence with less assistance from expensive designers and programmers. The fee for this workshop is $75.00 for FCTV members, $125.00 for non-members.
