Winter Travel Talk: Walking in Provence

The Woods Hole Public Library will be offering the next in its series of Winter Travel Talks on Saturday, February 11 at 3PM. The speakers will be veteran travelers Rich and Ellie Armstrong, who have presented tales of their walking trips several times in previous years. This year they have been walking in Provence, in southwest France, specifically in the Vaucluse and Luberon regions in the foothills of the Alps.

As in previous years they traveled in a small group led by the British firm ATG located in Oxford, which makes the arrangements for travel and accommodations. Every day for a week they walked through picturesque villages and dramatic scenery, with panoramic views seemingly around every corner. They walked about 8 miles a day, some days through acres of lavender fields, others through an ochre landscape. Among other villages, they visited  Roussillon, the source for all the ancient pigment ochre, used by  artists for centuries, yet the village remains perched above the cliffs, in all its orange and rose glory. Of course, they enjoyed delicious regional food and wine every day.
