Falmouth Onshore Wind Plans Ongoing BOEM and ISO New England

ISO-New England SouthCoast Wind Study Position: QP 1225 - Queue Position 1225
First, Falmouth was determined to be the best location to bring Mayflower Wind’s cable onshore through an initial feasibility analysis completed in 2019.

Second, ISO New England, the Regional Transmission Organization identified limitations of the existing electric grid transmission system around the Falmouth Point of Interconnection.
Third, the Massachusetts Energy Facility Siting Board postponed the state hearings and is holding updates with various officials every 45 days.

Although the Falmouth onshore wind project has been postponed at the Massachusetts Energy Facility Siting Board, studies continue at ISO New England and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management.
The Falmouth project comprises up to 1200 megawatts of buried direct current cables and a high voltage direct current converter plant plus (possible 400-megawatt battery back-up) on the Falmouth aquifer.
There have been no Falmouth public meetings since June 8, 2022

Representative design parameters for the SouthCoast Wind Project are outlined below. Refer to the Construction and Operations Plan for a detailed explanation of the project design envelope"
Offshore Export Cables :
"Two offshore export cable corridors - Falmouth and Brayton Point
• Up to five 345 kV Alternating Current (AC) or ±525 kV Direct Current (DC) (Falmouth) and six ±320 kV DC (Brayton Point) export cables buried between 3.2 feet to 13.1 feet (1 to 4 meters) beneath the seabed
• Maximum total corridor length is 87 miles (140 kilometers) for Falmouth and 124 miles (200 kilometers) for Brayton Point"
Onshore Facilities:
"• Landfall of export cables will be completed via horizontal directional drilling
• One onshore substation at two possible locations to disturb up to 26 acres (10.5 hectares)
• One high voltage direct current converter station to disturb up to 7.5 acres (3 hectares)
• Up to twelve 6.4-mile (10.3 kilometers) 345 kV AC or ±525 kV DC onshore export cables and five communication cables to substation (Falmouth) "

ISO- NEW ENGLAND NOTES

Note 1 below is a quote from ISO- New England ( Queque Position 1225 assigned to Southcoast Wind Falmouth Massachusetts)
QP 1225 :
"The preliminary results of the Second CCRIS identified several system performance challenges with continued addition of new generation interconnections to the Cape Cod area. These challenges will still have to be dealt with and can be further investigated in the serial study of QP 1225. In response to the preliminary results, the ISO received comments regarding the appropriate application of the Network Capability Interconnection Standard (NCIS – also referred-to as the minimum interconnection standard). These questions can also be further explored through the serial study of QP 1225. After the completion of the QP 1225 system impact study, the ISO will provide a status update to the PAC regarding these issues associated with the interconnection of generation to the Cape Cod area."
