Falmouth PD Recruits Fired For Drinking On Job, Lying : Report

One Falmouth police recruit was caught drinking at the academy, while the other lied about it to investigators, the report said.

FALMOUTH, MA — Two Falmouth police recruits were fired after violating rules at the police academy in New Braintree, according to a Cape Cod Times report. Student officers Ryan Murphy and Tyrone Reine III were terminated in January, one for drinking in the academy dorms, and the other for lying during the investigation, according to a public records request obtained by the newspapers.

According to the report, State Trooper Steffan Welch received a report of a hung-up 911 call coming from Murphy's room. Welch went to the room to investigate, and said he found Murphy, who appeared to be under the influence of alcohol. According to the report, Welch and another student officer Peter Maziarz went out to eat and had four beers, but the report said Welch search Maziarz's room and found empty nip bottles. The report also said Reine drove to the restaurant and lied about there being nips in the car, but after other witnesses said otherwise, Reine told the truth.

Investigators forwarded the information to Falmouth Police Chief Edward Dunne, and a letter signed by Town Manager Julian Suso on Jan. 11 told the academy they would terminate the recruits' employment immediately. Dunne told the Cape Cod Times the firings left gaps in police staff.
