Falmouth Select Board Approves Next Police Chief

Westborough Police Chief Jeffrey Lourie will serve in the same role in Falmouth after the board affirmed his appointment this week.

FALMOUTH, MA — Westborough Police Chief Jeffrey Lourie will serve in the same role for Falmouth after his appointment was approved by the Select Board at a meeting this week.

Lourie was chosen over two internal candidates in Lieutenant Sean Doyle and Captain Brain Reid. The two officials were present at the Monday meeting, however.

Interim Town Manager Peter Johnson-Staub said no start date has yet been agreed to, but the process isn't expected to drag on for too long.

Lourie will replace Ed Dunne in the role of chief, marking the first time since 2013 Falmouth has a different leader of the department.

Select Board members said Lourie's standing within the law enforcement community was a guiding factor in his appointment. The board consulted with three police chiefs during the hiring process, and they rated Lourie the highest of all candidates.

Lourie was also the most tenured of the three candidates, which includes a career in law enforcement spanning over three decades and 10 years as a police chief.

Though Lourie's resume was solid, board members expressed slight disappointment that an internal hire wasn't made.

"Our department has been holding it down for a long time under some arduous conditions, and I would just like Mr. Lourie to recognize that and take care of our good police officers," said Select Board member Edwin Zylinski.

Lourie, from the crowd, made a promise to do so.

The new chief spoke at the meeting, too, painting a path forward toward honoring traditions and creating new ones, as well as bringing the department a staunch advocate in all matters relating to the police department.

Lourie added that he plans to relocate with his family to Falmouth.
