Falmouth Survey Finds Over 800 Unmarked Graves At Old Burying Ground
A recent ground survey found that there are likely more unmarked burials than marked burials at Falmouth's Old Burying Ground.
FALMOUTH, MA — It's known in Falmouth that the cemetery on Mill Road is likely the first burying ground locally, and, until recently, that it held about 800 graves.
After a recent ground survey, however, that number has likely doubled.
A ground radar survey conducted by Heritage Consultants took the scope of four acres at the cemetery, searching for evidence of earlier structures there and also confirming how many burials were present.

After that survey, the number of marked burials were said to be 805. That is less than the number of unmarked burials discovered, according to the company.
The survey found 829 unmarked burials during the survey, meaning that more than half of those buried there are unknown, totaling 1,634 burials in total.

Speaking with the Falmouth Enterprise, Falmouth Historical Commission chairman Edward Haddad went as far as to hypothesize that the plot could be an "Indian burial ground."
The report also said that a presentation from the Department of Public Works on the report is expected to be given to the Select Board in March, which will likely serve as an overview of the findings.
