5) This day in history: navigator Napoleon abdicates as emperor of France for a second and final time (1815); Joe Louis wins the world heavyweight boxing title, beginning a record 12-year run as champion (1937); and Germany launches Operation Barbarossa, the surprise invasion of the USSR which would help decide the course of World War II, as a similar invasion had turned the tide against Napoleon more than a century before (1941).
