4) The 's summer lecture series continues tonight with . Elaine A. Ostrander of the National Human Genome Research Institute uses the domestic dog as an example of the large effects which can come about through small changes in genes. Possibly the most morphologically variable species on earth, today's innumerable breeds of dog are the results of artificial selection, a process analogous to natural selection. Now as in Darwin's time, their enormous variation provides a valuable example of genetics in action. The lecture is free, and begins at 8 p.m., in the MBL's Lillie Auditorium.
