It was determined that the Pond Street water treatment plant, located on the site was experiencing electrical power surges and operating on stand-by generator
An odor of electrical smoke was reported inside the treatment plant and all employees were evacuated.
The blades had already stopped spinning due to safety controls on the turbine.
The generator was shut down, power was disconnected to the plant, and power from the turbine into the treatment plant was also disconnected.
Smoke began to dissipate once the power was secured.
Blanchard says it’s believed that the fire was caused by a mechanical malfunction and the incident is currently under investigation.
