History Of Provincetown Art Colony Topic Of Upcoming Talk

“A Century of Creativity” is the title of an upcoming Falmouth Art Center virtual art talk by Christine McCarthy, chief executive officer of the Provincetown Art Association and Museum. The talk is scheduled for Thursday, May 20, at 6:30 PM on the Zoom meeting platform.

Ms. McCarthy will trace the history of the Provincetown art colony through the lens of the Provincetown Art Association. A group of artists and townspeople founded the association in 1914 to build a permanent collection of works by artists of the Outer Cape and to exhibit art that would allow for unification within the community. She will focus on tradition, controversy and growth of the colony.

Ms. McCarthy has headed up the Provincetown Art Association and Museum since 2001. Prior to taking the job in Provincetown, she worked at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston, as well as the Yale University Art Gallery and the Hunt-Cavanagh at Providence College.
