Iconic Sandwich Boardwalk Reopens After Reconstruction Project
The boardwalk reopens after nearly a year following a long-awaited reconstruction project.

SANDWICH, MA — There's another option to take in the beautiful views of Cape Cod this summer as the Sandwich Boardwalk is officially open again.
The town's historic boardwalk was closed in June 2023 for a long-awaited reconstruction project, but reopened for Memorial Day weekend following a final site visit on May 24.
Town officials said there may still be intermittent closures for small items to be completed, but the boardwalk will be open for the 2024 summer for residents, travelers and others to enjoy.

A reopening celebration will be planned once all of the final checklist items are complete, town officials said.
The boardwalk needed to be replaced as officials said the "beams, posts, bracing and metal fasteners have exceeded their useful life." These factors meant the boardwalk could have become a safety concern.

Sandwich's first historic boardwalk was constructed in 1875 but was updated, repaired and even replaced before this project. It serves as a footbridge to Town Neck Beach and a place for residents to jump into the water.
That final piece will be maintained, officials said, as ladders and longer planks for jumping are present after the repair project.
