Indigenous Masks Will Be Topic Of Zoom Art Talk

With masks so much a part of life during a pandemic, the Falmouth Art Center will hold an online art talk about the history and meaning of masks, titled “Masks: Imagining & Creating” by Sandra Faiman-Silva.

Falmouth resident Dr. Faiman-Silva is a retired professor of anthropology at Bridgewater State University, where she taught for more than 30 years.

The talk is scheduled for Thursday, September 24, from 6:30 to 7:30 PM. The talk on the Zoom meeting platform costs $10 for Falmouth Art Center members, $12 for nonmembers.

In explaining the topic of the talk, Dr. Faiman-Silva said, “Masks are permeated with cultural meaning, traditionally and even today with the COVID-19 pandemic. As cultural property, masks are worn for religious and secular purposes, in celebrations and ritual observances related to
Mother Earth, supernatural power, rites of passage and at many other ritual occasions around the world.”

The talk will explore indigenous cultural practices related to masks, their meanings and content of mask traditions in various cultures globally to learn about these richly diverse cultural traditions and practices.
