Juried Show Award Winners On Display At Art Center

The juror, artist Joyce Zavorskas of Brewster, said she was struck by the wide range of talent represented by the pieces in the show.

Of the 146 works submitted to the show, she chose 64.

Jennifer Ray of Mashpee won Best in Show for her startling realistic close-up portrait of a train’s wheel, a watercolor called “No. 19211 Penn Central RR.”

Ms. Zavorskas said of the piece, “This skillfully composed portrait of a railway car stopped on the tracks presents a moment in time, captured with exquisite detail. The artist contrasts the rough texture of wood and gravel with smooth metallic man-made surfaces and their shadows. I was enthralled with this portrait of a train car.”

Jurors are asked to choose their own categories for the additional awards given, and Ms. Zavorskas invented her own: Best Rocks, Sand and Sea; Best Portrait of Place; Best Nature’s Palette; and Best Gardens.

Robin Amaral of Hatchville won Best Rocks, Sand and Sea for her acrylic painting, “Aquinnah Balance Rock.” Ms. Zavorskas wrote of the piece, “The haunting harmony of shapes, colors and textures combined with the mysterious presence of a rock precariously placed on top of another rock. The vertical rock has a quiet strength and almost a human spirit.”

Diana Lee of East Falmouth won Best Portrait of Place for her oil painting set in Falmouth Heights, Heartbreak Hill. “These houses inserted in to the land at ocean’s edge evoke a timeless sense of place. The strong diagonal of the road pulls the viewer into the painting and creates a sense of depth,” Ms. Zavorskas wrote. “I enjoyed the energy of the brushstrokes contouring and shaping the land forms.”

Ms. Zavorskas chose a felt scarf made by East Falmouth fiber artist Suzanne Brown for Best Nature’s Palette, and Andrea Moore of Falmouth won Best Gardens for her monoprint, called “Acanthus, Cosmos Globe Thistle.”

Of Ms. Brown’s work, Ms. Zavorskas wrote, “I was intrigued by the colors and textures of a fall landscape woven into a shawl. I could sense the presence of a field and forest in the fall.” In regards to Ms. Moore’s piece she wrote, “The radiant qualities of ink on paper and the variety of shapes and textures immediately pulled me into this unique impression.”

Ms. Zavorskas gave honorable mentions to West Falmouth artist Gary Boehk’s oil painting, “Little Island House”; Falmouth artist Linda Walker’s oil painting, “Tidal Harmony”; and Mashpee artist Manny Dimaculangan’s paper collage, “Corvus.”

The Juried Autumn Exhibition is on view through September 27. In addition to the Juried Autumn show, visitors can see two other shows on exhibit this month: the Upper Cape Camera Club show and a one-woman show, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun: Work by Sue Beardsley.”

Admission to the Falmouth Art Center at 137 Gifford Street is free. The center is open Mondays to Fridays, from 9 AM to 4 PM; Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM and Sundays from 1 to 4 PM.
