Local Photographers Shine In Juried Show

Lions, lilies and landscapes are among the subjects at the Falmouth Art Center’s annual Juried Photography Show.

Nancy Green, a photographer based in Plymouth who led the jury to choose the works in the show, said, “The entries were so diverse and intriguing. When we immersed ourselves in viewing all the images that were entered, it was hard to imagine having to edit out any of the creations.”

In total, 229 photographs were submitted to the show, and 53 were chosen.

The other jurors were Susan Asaro of Wareham and Bruce Skinner of Carver.

The show runs through May 31 in the Falmouth Art Center Hermann Gallery.

Award winners included those who live in the area and entrants who participated from off-Cape.

The Best of Show award went to Carrie Ann Belcher of Milton for her image called “The Dock.” Ms. Green said, “The impact of this image is so moving in its stillness.”

After choosing Best of Show, the judges picked four other award categories of their choosing, as well as honorable mentions.

Greg Anderson of Buzzards Bay, who is retired from a distinguished career as a photojournalist, won Best Motion for his image, “Duck Diving.” Mr. Anderson said he took the image while watching ducks gathering near the Bourne Bridge at the Cape Cod Canal. Ms. Green said of the image, “The quality of the technical execution is superb.”

The Best Animal award went to Barbara Hecker of Falmouth for her image called, “Who Me?” Ms. Green said the beauty of the shot is that it appears to show one horse hugging another one, as its head rests on the back of another horse. “It’s an emotionally wonderful capture,” Ms. Green said.

Best Creative went to Jeannine Lavoie of Bourne for her “Beauty in a Bottle,” a picture of a leaf in a vase. “What a terrific use of imagination and subject matter,” Ms. Green wrote of the image. “Loved everything about this image.”

Best Floral went to Susan Simon of Marstons Mills for her piece, “Ribbon Dancer.” Ms. Green said, “The color, movement and composition of the flower is so impactful. Every petal looks as though it is dancing and swirling despite its being past its best bloom day.”

The following photographers won honorable mention: Leigh Ann Hartsfield of East Falmouth, Richard Tranfaglia of Southborough, Molly Johnston of Falmouth, Kevin McCarthy of East Falmouth, Julie DeMello of East Falmouth, Darcy Dangremond of Paxton, Carrie Ann Belcher of Milton, and All Garber of Santa Fe, New Mexico.

The Falmouth Art Center, 137 Gifford Street, is free and open to the public Monday to Friday, from 9 AM to 4 PM; Saturday, from 10 AM to 2 PM; and Sunday, from 1 to 4 PM.
