Two energy accidents off the coast of Massachusetts have created two distinct responses from government agencies. The 2003 Barge B-120 oil spill and the 2024 Nantucket blade failure.

After the 2003 B-120 oil spill, the Massachusetts legislature created the Buzzards Bay Oil Spill Commission. In which public hearings were held. Note 1
In addition, public oil spill hearings were held by the Coast Guard a federal agency at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. Note 2

In July a blade broke off a wind turbine off the coast of Nantucket. The debris is being found at beaches in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The debris consists of fiberglass, microplastics, foam, and wood.
The type of the 107-meter blade (350 feet) used was approved and tested by a Massachusetts state agency in 2019. Note 3
To date, there have been no state or federal public wind turbine debris hearings.
