Receiving Next Week for Abstract Art for Juried Show

Next Tuesday, September 27, from 9am to 5:30pm, is the day to bring work in to be considered for the show.

Abstract art is defined as non-representational. It does not attempt to represent an accurate depiction of reality (such as a person, an object, a landscape) but instead uses shapes, colors, forms and gestural marks to achieve its effect. Even works that loosely depict a recognizable scene, person or object, are not considered abstract because the viewer can recognize the subject.

The show is open to members and non-members of Falmouth Art Center, and all mediums are welcome. Submission fees for Falmouth Art Center members are $15 for the first entry and $10 for each additional entry.

For non-members, the submission fee is $20 for the first entry and $15 for each additional entry.

Members also get a higher commission if a work is accepted into the show and sells. The commission for members is 70% of the sale price. For non-members, the commission is 50% of the sale price.

The juror for the Abstract Show, Elaine A. King, who lives part-time in Cataumet, has had a distinguished career as a museum director, curator, art critic and professor of art history. She is Professor Emeritus of Art History, Theory and Museum Studies at Carnegie Mellon University. She also writes about the arts for national publications.

Ms. King will choose which works will be in the show. She will also choose awards for the show, with Best in Show receiving $200 and four additional judge’s awards each receiving $100.

Accepted works will be posted on the Falmouth Art Center website on Thursday, September 29 on or before noon. Works not accepted for the show can be picked up at the Art Center on Thursday or Friday, September 29 or 30.

The exhibit dates for the Juried Abstract Show are September 30 to October 24. The reception for the show is Friday, October 7 from 5 to 7pm at Falmouth Art Center.
