Scientists Spot 161 Whales Off Coast Of Massachusetts

MASSACHUSETTS — Ever wondered what a good day on the Northeast Fisheries Science Center's North Atlantic Right Whale team looks like? Well, one of them happened recently.

Members of the team were conducting an aerial survey when they saw a "dazzling array of sightings."

What was it? Over 160 whales.

The team spotted 161 whales, comprising seven species, south of Martha’s Vineyard and southeast of Nantucket.

On social media, officials said highlights included "seeing 93 sei whales—one of the highest concentrations of sei whales they’d ever seen during a single survey flight."

"Another highlight was two killer whales, which they don’t often see during this survey. More incredible—one of the killer whales had a tuna in its mouth," officials said.

Also in the grouping were 36 humpbacks, 21 fin whales, as well as minke, sperm and North Atlantic right whales.
