Spring Zoom Art Talks include Mavor, McGurl, Granlund & ATM

Art, politics, maritime, graffiti, birds and more will be the topics at the upcoming Falmouth Art Center event, Speaking of Art, a series of four art talks on Zoom taking place in the month of April.

Nationally renowned artists from the region, the fiber artist Salley Mavor of Falmouth and the maritime artist Joseph McGurl of Cataumet will both be giving talks. The other two speakers are David Granlund, who is the political cartoonist for The Boston Globe and The Cape Cod Times among other newspapers; and a London-based artist who goes by the moniker ATM, who specializes in painting large bird murals on the sides of buildings.

The talks will be recorded, so people who cannot attend on the day of the talk, will be sent the recording.

Salley Mavor, who is known for creating fascinating miniature worlds out of fibers, will be speaking about her “Enchanting Miniature World” on Thursday, April 7 at 6pm on Zoom. Ms. Mavor will be speaking from her Wee Folk Studio, her home studio where she crafts her intricate works. She will talk about recent works including her children’s book, “My Bed: Enchanting Ways to Fall Asleep Around the World.”

Painter Joseph McGurl is known for what he calls “Contemporary American Luminism.” He will be speaking on Thursday, April 28 at 6pm on Zoom.

According to Mr. McGurl, “Luminism is a term that describes a philosophy where natural light is symbolic of the spirit found in nature and translated into a work of art.” In his presentation, he will discuss how Emerson, Thoreau and other 19th century philosophers influenced artists such as Fitz Henry Lane, Sanford Gifford, and Martin Johnson Heade. There will be some discussion of technique, philosophy, spirituality and science, as it relates to the historical artists and my his own art work, Mr. McGurl said.

The work of political cartoonist Dave Granlund has been published in daily papers since 1978. His Zoom talk will be on Tuesday, April 19 at 6pm.

Mr. Granlund’s award-winning work has appeared in over 700 daily papers as well as nationally on television. His sports cartoons are in the Baseball Hall of Fame and the Basketball Hall of Fame. He is an Air Force veteran whose assignments included the White House.

The British artist ATM, whose real name is Mark Anthony, specializes in designing and painting large murals on walls in London and elsewhere. His Zoom talk is scheduled for Thursday, April 14 at 4pm. He said he paints “endangered species on urban walls, drawing attention to the environmental crisis by bringing huge images of native fauna, much of which is disappearing at an alarming rate, to a wide audience.”

By showing the beauty and significance of these creatures, ATM said, he hopes to inspire interest, curiosity and a desire to protect them and the habitats they depend upon.

The talks are a spring fundraiser for the Falmouth Art Center, which is a 501c3 non-profit organization. The price is $50 for each talk or all four talks for $150. The first 50 people to sign up for all four art talks get a gift bag with a piece of handmade pottery and a handmade “mug rug,” which is a woven square, made by local artists.
