“Travel & Collected Works” Paintings by Valerie Belcher
The paintings of local artist, Valerie Belcher, will be on display at the Maser Gallery at Falmouth Community Television, 310A Dillingham Avenue in Falmouth from June 1 to June 26. The public is invited to the artist’s reception, Sunday, June 15, from 3:00 – 5:00 pm.
Originally from Medway, MA, trained as a registered nurse and holding a B.A. in Economics, Valerie Belcher turned to art nine years ago when her husband passed away. “It was, and is, my salvation,” says Valerie. For those nine years she has been painting and growing her customer base. She is now a self-employed artist working through galleries and with professional interior designers, always striving to create art that is both pleasing to the eye and contemplative. She explains, “I am a tonal painter who works in oil on canvas. I strive for color harmony and a blend of details and ambiguity. The shapes in my paintings are designed to play against each other, creating patterns of light and color.”
Valerie has been studying and exhibiting at Falmouth Artist Guild for over ten years with local artist Terry Dunn and many other local talents. She is a member of the Falmouth Artist Guild, a Juried member of the Cape Cod Art Association in Barnstable, and a member of the American Women Artists Group.
2013 was a busy year for Valerie: she studied in Spain with noted abstract artist Eric Aho, and with national artist Mike Rooney of Cape Cod, North Carolina and Key West Florida. At the Falmouth Artist Guild in July, she won Jurors Choice Award, and in October received Honorable Mention in the Juried Show. 2014 brought studies in Cuba with The Art Student League of New York, and with Portico Gallery owner and artist Jordan Pope in Santa Barbara, California.
Additionally, for over 23 years Valerie has been crafting magnificent, functional and handmade works of art known as Nantucket Baskets. They are made in the traditional way- maintaining the original format of the Nantucket Lightship workmen who wove the baskets for over a century. Her baskets now reside in homes all over the world.
Valerie’s work has recently been shown in Falmouth’s Chafin Gallery and Highfield Hall.
Gallery hours: Sunday and Monday: 2-10PM; Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday: 10AM-10PM; Friday: 10AM-6PM; Saturday: Closed.
