Tutoring Tailored for Web-Savvy Kids

Students who fail to find inspiration in flash cards and workbooks may benefit from this web-based teaching method for math skills.

Now that the kids are back at school, many of them may be wishing they’d followed their teacher’s advice and done those workbooks and practiced their flash cards during summer vacation. Today’s students, however, have grown up with rapid-fire media and Internet exposure and are not terribly motivated by flash cards or workbooks.

Beginning this month, there is a new option available to families in the Falmouth area—one that is relatively inexpensive, compared to private tutoring.

According to Tamarind Math coach Pam Marck, the Tamarind Math method "has been around a long time, but is new to this area."

Tamarind Math of Cape Cod and the Islands is an individualized web-based math program for students in Grades 1-12. The curriculum teaches math facts and fundamentals up through Algebra II and is aligned with all MCAS standards.

With the support of their personal Tamarind Learning Coach (TLC), students who work online for 10-15 minutes a day can gain much-needed confidence and success. The TLC acts like a personal trainer, individualizing lessons, providing incentive programs when appropriate and motivating kids enough to get their skills stronger (but not so much that they lose confidence or get confused or discouraged).

"Many children 'get by' for a while, but if they haven't really mastered math fundamentals, it often catches up with them as they get into more advanced concepts," Marck says. "For example, if they haven't really mastered division facts, they'll usually have problems when they start working with fractions."
